9/2/16 - River Fork Camper and Trailer Park, Lake City, CO
It rained off and on during the night. We hooked up this morning and left the
Gunnison area and drove to Lake City.
Jim’s parents honeymooned here in 1930.
His family has been coming to this little town ever since then. His sister Judy came here every summer and
camped up in the mountains. On the way
to Lake City we stopped at the place where the famous cannibal, Alferd Packer, ate the bodies of his companions when they became lost in the mountains in the winter of 1874. We got the trailer set up and then drove the two
blocks to the center of town because it was threatening to rain. We went into the Alferd Packer Saloon and Cannibal Grill for a beer. We went back to the Casita and after a while
we walked back to town. We stopped in
at Milly’s and had a beer -- this was the last day for this bar and it was
closing. They had happy hour all night.
